In light of the increasing use of the term fake news Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) ran episode of 60 minutes which examined the phenomenon and spoke to well-known Twitter troll and pundit Mike Cernovich. A particular segment of the interview involving Cernovich and interviewer Scott Pelley has been getting a lot of attention on Twitter. The clip has gone viral after Mike Cernovich seemingly turned the tables on the narrative Scott Pelley was building of the twitter troll as a misguided person spreading false information. When told that Hillary’s fall on September 11 of 2016 could be accounted for by her having pneumonia, Cernovich asked “how do you know that? who told you?” to which Scott Pelley replied “the campaign told us”.
“And why would you trust them?” Cernovich asked in reply.

It is a good question because any political campaign will have the motivation of spreading information which will make their candidate look good, whether it is entirely truthful or not. By asking this question we saw one of the reasons the media lacks much credibility these days, their unwillingness to question ‘truths’ told to them by people who they more or less agree with politically.
Increasingly we have seen independent Twitter personalities and people without large teams who are outside of the establishment press become more influential. The establishment media narrative doesn’t have sole control of where people are interested and focused, like would have been easier to achieve in years past before the advent of the internet and digital information.
We at the Free Speech Report will continue to keep an eye on this dynamic between people whose power is mostly derivative of the internet and those who mostly use more legacy technology to get their message out to their audience.
